Working With Ayurvedic Medicine Manufacturers: Licence, GMP and Testing

October 2026 · 5 min read · Published by HealthKares

Ayurvedic products are regulated in India under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, with licensing handled by the state licensing authority for AYUSH. Whether you are buying finished products or having a manufacturer make products under your brand, the basic checks are the same.

Manufacturing licence

An Ayurvedic manufacturer needs a licence from the state licensing authority, commonly issued in Form 25-D. Ask for a copy and check that the products you want are covered by it. If a manufacturer makes products for your brand, your name and theirs should both appear correctly on the label.

GMP under Schedule T

Schedule T sets out Good Manufacturing Practice for Ayurvedic, Siddha and Unani medicines. Ask whether the plant is Schedule T compliant and when it was last inspected. Some exporters also hold WHO-GMP or the AYUSH Premium Mark.

Raw herb quality

Ask how raw herbs are identified and tested before use, and whether the manufacturer follows the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India. A certificate of analysis should cover identity, moisture and, for exports especially, heavy metals, pesticide residue and microbial limits.

Classical or proprietary

Classical formulations follow the authoritative texts listed in the law. Proprietary Ayurvedic medicines are the maker's own formulas and carry their own licence approvals. Ask which type each product is, since it affects what you can claim on the label.

Claims and labelling

Be careful with health claims on packs and in advertising. The Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act limits claims for certain diseases. If a supplier suggests strong cure claims, treat it as a warning sign.
